Irving, congratulations on your birthday...

DEVIL’S BOX

            for a fiddler

Some put inside it the rattle of serpent,

to keep far the dark spirit its keening calls.

A daughter may hear it & loosen hair, turn cat.  A wife.

Them as play it, too full of story & winking & easy teeth.

When they come, there is undoing

true as arrows from their bows.

Keep playing, maestro!

with respect,

Ed Taylor
